    Design of a GSM based digital door lock

    The proposed project is intended to design an access control system using GSM technology. GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile telephony system that uses a variation of Time Division Multiple Accesses (TDMA) and most widely uses the three digital wireless telephony technologies i.e., TDMA, CDMA & FDMA. The present project is an innovative idea for providing security by restricting the access of certain areas to certain people only. In this case of security, the opening & closing of the gate of the restricted areas is done through SMS. A GSM modem is used for this purpose. It allows only authenticated SIM cards or number for the access purpose rejecting all other unauthenticated SIM card users. When an ‘OPEN ’SMS is sent, the gate opens up and then closes automatically

    Study on Information Needs and Seeking Behavior of the Health Science Researchers in an Indian Tertiary Health Care Institution

    The interest of health science researchers depend upon their moral and professional requirements to seek the information as the libraries are services oriented departments. The exponential growth of knowledge cause abundant of documents in various forms such as print and non-print materials and others that is, electronic information resources. The demand for specialized information by the users has necessitated the library to repackage the information from various sources to suit the user’s needs. The health science information seekers accept evidence based context and problem based learning is a part of information needs and they prefer their friends and colleagues as the most relevant sources to seek information, but print texts are more preferred than different database by the law students. The health science researchers fulfill their primary information needs through internet sources to enhance research activity. The e-resources are easy to save and copy and consume less time to access the required information. Understanding the relation between information needs and technology based information service can provide meaningful result to address the information seeker’s unmet health information. Further studies can expand the findings of this current study to better understand their barriers to health information

    The object "car" and "cat" can be easily distinguished by humans, but how these labels are assigned? Grouping these images is easy for a person into different categories, but its very tedious for a computer. Hence, an object recognition system finds objects in the real world from an image. Object recognition algorithms rely on matching, learning or pattern recognition algorithms using appearance-based or feature-based techniques. In this thesis, the use of color and shape attributes as an explicit color and shape representation respectively for object detection is proposed. Color attributes are dense, computationally effective, and when joined with old-fashioned shape features provide pleasing results for object detection. The procedure of shape detection is actually a natural extension of the job of edge detection at the pixel level to the difficulty of global contour detection. A tool for a systematic analysis of edge based shape detection is provided by this filtering scheme. This enables us to find distinctions between objects based on color and shape

    Extensions of Natural Radioactivity to 4th-Type and of the Periodic Table to Super-heavy Nuclei: Contribution of Raj K Gupta to Cold Nuclear Phenomena

    We have studied here the contribution of Indian Scientists associated with Prof. Raj K. Gupta to cold nuclear phenomena during the last almost four decades, which led to the discovery of fourth kind of natural radioactivity (also known as Cluster Radioactivity, CR) and to the extension of periodic table to super heavy nuclei. It is exclusively pointed out how the Quantum Mechanical Fragmentation Theory (QMFT) advanced by Prof. Raj K. Gupta and Collaborators led to the discovery of unique phenomenon of CR along with the predictions leading to the synthesis of super heavy elements. We have also mentioned the development of dynamical theories based on QMFT, the Preformed Cluster Model(PCM) and the dynamical cluster-decay model (DCM), to study the ground and excited state decays of nuclei, respectively, by Gupta and Collaborators. It is matter of great honor and pride for us to bring out this study to enthuse the young researchers to come up with novel ideas and have inspiration from the scientific contributions of Prof. Raj K. Gupta who is coincidentally celebrating his platinum jubilee birthday anniversary this year

    Management of infected non-unions of long bones using limb reconstruction system (LRS) fixator

    Background: Due to increasing number of high-energy traumatic events, the incidence of complex and compound fractures are also in the rise. Such fractures are often exposed to various environmental contaminants, inadequate debridement and sometimes erroneous decision making leading to cases of infected nonunions. Eradication of infection in such cases and achieving union may sometimes pose serious challenge to orthopaedic surgeons. Presence of comminution, bone gap or deformity can seriously complicate the situation. No definite surgical technique has been found to be full proof in dealing with these infected nonunion cases. In this scenario the limb reconstruction system (LRS) fixator is emerging as a useful option for infected nonunions with deformity or gap nonunion.Methods: Twenty seven cases of infected nonunions involving tibia (n=19), femur (n=7) and humerus (n=1) were treated by LRS fixators after debridement of the infected nonunion site. Flap cover procedure was done as per necessity. Bone gaps and limb length discrepancies were dealt with bone transport or limb lengthening by the LRS instrument. Weight-bearing and removal of fixator was decided according to the radiological evidence of healing.Results: All the nonunions and the regeneration sites healed uneventfully, although the union time was varied (range, 21-52 weeks). Commonest complication was pin-tract infection and pain. The mean lower extremity functional score (LEFS) was 60.3 out of 80. Conclusions: LRS fixator is an excellent tool for management of infected nonunions which is easy to apply, comfortable for the patient with minimum complications and predictable as well as reproducible outcomes

    Detecting galaxies in a large H{\sc i}~spectral cube

    The upcoming Square Kilometer Array (SKA) is expected to produce humongous amount of data for undertaking H{\sc i}~science. We have developed an MPI-based {\sc Python} pipeline to deal with the large data efficiently with the present computational resources. Our pipeline divides such large H{\sc i}~21-cm spectral cubes into several small cubelets, and then processes them in parallel using publicly available H{\sc i}~source finder {\sc SoFiA-22}. The pipeline also takes care of sources at the boundaries of the cubelets and also filters out false and redundant detections. By comapring with the true source catalog, we find that the detection efficiency depends on the {\sc SoFiA-22} parameters such as the smoothing kernel size, linking length and threshold values. We find the optimal kernel size for all flux bins to be between 33 to 55 pixels and 77 to 1515 pixels, respectively in the spatial and frequency directions. Comparing the recovered source parameters with the original values, we find that the output of {\sc SoFiA-22} is highly dependent on kernel sizes and a single choice of kernel is not sufficient for all types of H{\sc i}~galaxies.     Operative outcome of high energy pilon fractures: a retrospective comparison between internal fixation and Ilizarov external fixation

    Background: Pilon fractures are serious injuries with many devastating soft-tissue complications associated with them. Deciding a definite treatment plan has always proved a challenge. Comparative studies between the various surgical techniques used for pilon fractures are uncommon and consensus is yet to be reached regarding the best surgical option. Purpose of this study is to retrospectively compare the operative results (complications, functional and radiographic outcomes) of pilon fractures treated either with internal fixation or Ilizarov ring fixators.Methods: Forty-six patients with pilon fractures were retrospectively studied; twenty-one of them had minimal invasive fixation by ankle spanning Ilizarov fixators and 25 patients had internal fixations by either minimal invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) or by open reduction.  The patients were followed-up for a mean of 34 months (range, 24-51 months).Results: The internal fixation group had a higher incidence of soft-tissue complications and deep infections. In comparison the Ilizarov group had only superficial pin-tract infections but no other soft-tissue complications. Although the Ilizarov group had a higher incidence of malreduction and malunion in their series compared to the internal fixation group, there was no significant difference in the AOFAS ankle function score (p-value 0.2922) between the two groups after a follow-up of 2-4 years.Conclusions: The moderately long term functional outcome appears to be similar in both internal fixation and Ilizarov groups. But the Ilizarov technique is less likely to cause any serious peri-operative soft-tissue complications or deep infection. Familiarity of the surgeon with a particular technique should also be considered during surgical decision making.

    The International Natural Product Sciences Taskforce (INPST) and the power of Twitter networking exemplified through #INPST hashtag analysis

    Background: The development of digital technologies and the evolution of open innovation approaches have enabled the creation of diverse virtual organizations and enterprises coordinating their activities primarily online. The open innovation platform titled "International Natural Product Sciences Taskforce" (INPST) was established in 2018, to bring together in collaborative environment individuals and organizations interested in natural product scientific research, and to empower their interactions by using digital communication tools. Methods: In this work, we present a general overview of INPST activities and showcase the specific use of Twitter as a powerful networking tool that was used to host a one-week "2021 INPST Twitter Networking Event" (spanning from 31st May 2021 to 6th June 2021) based on the application of the Twitter hashtag #INPST. Results and Conclusion: The use of this hashtag during the networking event period was analyzed with Symplur Signals (https://www.symplur.com/), revealing a total of 6,036 tweets, shared by 686 users, which generated a total of 65,004,773 impressions (views of the respective tweets). This networking event's achieved high visibility and participation rate showcases a convincing example of how this social media platform can be used as a highly effective tool to host virtual Twitter-based international biomedical research events

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.
